How Do I Deal With Uncertainty? I Don’t. We Just Coexist.
Uncertainty is that one guest who never announces her arrival.
She simply walks in, makes herself comfortable on your sofa and asks, “So, what are we worrying about today?”
And unfortunately, I am very hospitable.
I let her stay.
Sometimes, I even serve her tea.
Because if there is one thing I have learned about life, it is this:
You can make all the plans you want. Life will still reserve the right to say, “Nice plan. Let’s do something completely different.”
Uncertainty and My Overactive Brain
I don’t deal with uncertainty particularly well.
I overthink it professionally.
Give me one uncertain situation and my brain will produce fifteen possible outcomes before I have even finished my morning coffee.
“What if this happens?”
“What if that doesn’t happen?”
“What if I make the wrong decision?”
“What if I make the right decision and something still goes wrong?”
And my personal favourite:
“What if something happens that I haven’t even thought of yet?”
At that point, even my brain needs a holiday.
Then comes the planning.
Plan A.
Plan B.
Plan C.
And, because apparently I enjoy suffering, a backup plan for Plan C.
I sometimes wish life came with a user manual.
Chapter 1: What Is Happening?
Chapter 2: Why Is It Happening?
Chapter 3: Relax. You Are Going To Be Fine.
Sadly, life prefers suspense.
No spoilers.
No previews.
Just coming soon.
Uncertainty: I’d Like Some Answers, Please
The funny thing is, I have worried about so many things that never happened.
And I have faced things I never saw coming.
Some were difficult.
Some were painful.
Some completely rearranged my plans.
And yet, somehow, I figured them out.
Not always gracefully.
Sometimes I cried.
Sometimes I complained.
Sometimes I ate something I didn’t need and called it emotional support.
But I got through them.
And that has changed how I look at uncertainty.
I still like knowing what is going to happen.
Of course I do.
I would happily accept a five-year forecast from the universe, preferably with dates, footnotes and a convenient FAQ section.
But I’m slowly learning that uncertainty is not always a warning.
Sometimes it is simply an unopened door.
And maybe I don’t need to know what is behind it before I take the next step.
So, How Do I Deal With Uncertainty?
I make my plans.
I do what I can.
I worry a little.
Okay… sometimes more than a little.
Then I remind myself that I have survived every unexpected chapter so far.
Every “What now?”
Every “I didn’t see this coming.”
Every “This was definitely not part of the plan.”
And maybe that is what growing older teaches us.
Not that we finally know everything.
But that we trust ourselves a little more when we don’t.
So, I don’t really have a perfect formula for dealing with uncertainty.
I just take the next step.
And then the next.
And when tomorrow refuses to reveal its plans?
Fine.
Let it keep its secrets.
Because tomorrow doesn’t know what I’m bringing either. 😉
