I Think I’ve Been Collecting Hobbies 😄

The Hobby I Didn’t Know I Had

I’ve never really been good at having just one hobby.

I like learning things.

New things. Random things. Sometimes useful things. Sometimes things I have absolutely no practical reason to learn. 😄

Over the years, I’ve tried illustration, 3D illustration, drawing on Procreate, painting, glass painting, crocheting, embroidery, music, and trying new recipes. I’ve made quite a few things along the way too.

Some stayed for a while, some were quietly replaced by something new, and a few are probably still sitting somewhere, waiting for me to remember them. 😄

So sometimes I wonder—do I actually have too many hobbies, or is my real hobby simply learning something new?

Maybe it’s just curiosity. I like being a beginner, figuring things out, making mistakes, and seeing what I can create.

And then there is writing.

The Hobby That Found Its Way Back

I started writing again last December.

But writing has actually been a part of me since childhood. I loved making up stories. My mind would create a new one almost every day.

I could look at the stars and imagine stories hidden among them, watch clouds drifting across the sky and wonder where they were going, or follow butterflies in my imagination to some faraway place. Even rainy days had their own magic. I would sit listening to the raindrops and somehow, new words would find their way into my thoughts.

I never really thought of writing as a hobby back then.

It was simply something I loved doing.

When Writing Went Quiet

As life became busier, writing slowly became less and less a part of my everyday life. There was always something else that needed my attention, and without even realising it, I drifted away from it.

I did try to find my way back once. I started a travel blog because I have always loved travelling, discovering new places, and learning about them. I loved collecting little stories from different places and putting them into words.

But that too slowly got lost in the busyness of life.

Until last December.

There was no big plan. Just a quiet voice inside me saying,

You should write again.

And this time, I listened.

I created an account on WordPress. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure if I could still write. It had been a while, and I wondered if the words would come.

So I started.

One thought became a few words, a few words became a paragraph, and slowly, writing found its way back into my everyday life.

The funny thing is, I thought I had lost that part of myself.

I hadn’t.

I had simply stopped listening to it.

Maybe Curiosity Is My Real Hobby

Looking at all the things I’ve tried over the years, I think there is a pattern.

I simply like learning.

I don’t necessarily need to become an expert. Sometimes I just want to know, Can I do this?

And then I try.

Some things stay. Some don’t. Some get forgotten and come back years later.

Writing did.

And now, my next plan is to learn the guitar. 🎸

I have no idea how that will go, but I’m curious enough to find out.

I don’t want to reach the end of my life saying, “I always wanted to try that.”

I’d rather say, “I tried.”

Even if I wasn’t very good at it.

There is only one life. I want to keep learning, keep creating, and keep following that little voice that says, Why not?

And perhaps the most beautiful part of this journey has been seeing where those words have travelled.

I started writing again without knowing where it would take me.

Today, when I look at this map and see readers from so many different parts of the world, I have to smile.

I guess my words decided to travel even when I wasn’t. 🌍

Maybe that’s what happens when you make room for something you love again. You never quite know where it might take you.

Now it’s your turn. What’s your hobby? Have you picked up something new recently, or is there an old hobby waiting for you to return to it? What got you into it? I’d love to hear your story.

Until The Next Whisper,

—Rajeshwari 🧿💕

One of my favourite hobbies is trying something new! This week I recovered a few tiny oak saplings from many thousands struggling after ten weeks of drought in a local ancient wood. One may live on for a few hundred years. Who knows!

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

That’s such a beautiful hobby to have, Jonathan! 🌱😊 And the thought that one of those tiny saplings might grow for hundreds of years is amazing. 🤍What a lovely thing to be part of!🦋✨

A person’s hobbies do not really change; sometimes, they simply fall silent for a while.

Rajeshwari ji, the writing you thought you had lost had never truly gone anywhere. It remained within you, just like a seed resting quietly beneath the soil, waiting for its season to arrive. The busyness of life had only quieted its voice. When you finally listened to that gentle inner calling last December, the words found their way back to you.

And perhaps this is the most beautiful form of curiosity not learning something merely to gain something, but learning something to discover a little more of oneself.

Whether it is painting, music, travel, or writing, every new experience does not merely open a new world outside us; it opens a doorway to some unexplored world within.

That is why saying, “I tried,” is far more meaningful than saying, “I was good at it.” The fullness of life is not measured by the number of achievements, but by the experiences we had the courage to embrace with an open heart.

And when something true rises from within and takes the form of words, it needs no feet to travel. It crosses boundaries and finds its way into an unknown heart.

Perhaps this is the quietest and most beautiful secret of your writing.

    Warm wishes. 🌹

Thank you so much Vijay ji for such a beautiful and thoughtful comment. 🌹 I especially loved the thought that some hobbies simply fall silent for a while. Your words made me look at my own journey a little differently. Truly grateful for this lovely perspective. 😊🦋✨

What a delightful and inspiring reflection! 😊 I love the idea that your real hobby may not be any one particular activity, but curiosity itself—the joy of learning, experimenting, creating, and simply asking, “Can I do this?”

Your journey through illustration, painting, crocheting, embroidery, music, cooking, and now writing shows that hobbies don’t always have to become lifelong commitments. Sometimes they are simply little doors we open, explore, and close when another door catches our curiosity.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much Verma ji! 😊 I love how you described hobbies as little doors we open and explore. That’s exactly how I see them too each one leaves behind a little joy and something new I’ve learned. 🌸🦋✨

      1. vermavkv Avatar

Thank you so much for your warm words! 😊 I’m delighted that the “little doors” metaphor resonated with you. I feel hobbies have a wonderful way of opening those doors to curiosity, creativity, and unexpected joy

      2. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much! 🤍 I completely agree sometimes these little doors lead us to the most unexpected and joyful places. 🦋✨

    Your post is a revelation.

Perhaps all writers are curious as a cat.

I have also been a Jack of all trades.

But unlike you I get bored very fast and then move on to the next venture.

I think I am always seeking novelty

But yes, writing came in like a whisper and stayed. Guess I was always a storyteller like the ancient mariner on endless voyages.

I wish you all the best for the guitar The only loss we won’t be able to hear you play.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, I’m actually quite the opposite Geeta ji… I don’t get bored that easily. 😄 Once I start something, I usually like to complete it. Of course, some things are not getting the time they deserve these days! 😁 And as for the guitar, who knows, maybe someday you’ll actually get to hear me play! 😉

      1. gc1963 Avatar

        I look forward to it.

    Good evening, Rajeshwari! ☀️

I enjoyed reading your reflection about how your hobby is curiosity itself. Being curious about things leads you to a joy of learning and experimenting. Nicely written!

Wishing you success in your writing journey, and have a very wonderful weekend! ☺️

Oh, that’s quite interesting! ✨ And yes, I know what curiosity means—it’s that little urge to explore, discover, and find something new in everything.

And about the guitar 🎸—you should definitely give it a try! There’s something beautiful about learning an instrument from scratch and slowly finding your own rhythm.

And of course, writers travel through their words. Sometimes, they don’t need to go anywhere physically; their imagination takes them places, and their words carry the readers along with them.

I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about writing—the ability to create an entire world with nothing but words. 📖✨

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Exactly! 😊 I love that thought about writers travelling through their words. And yes, the guitar is still on my “one day I’ll try this” list. 🎸😂 Who knows, maybe one day I’ll surprise myself and actually learn to play it!🦋✨

I thought I was the only person who felt this way! Almost everyone used to find me weird for being curious, jumping from one thing to another instead of sticking to a few hobbies for the rest of my life. Glad that I’m not alone 🙂

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, you’re definitely not alone! 😄 I’ve often wondered the same thing about myself. 🤍 Maybe being curious and trying different things isn’t weird after all it’s just our way of enjoying life. 😊🦋✨

Our hobby was collecting books, first editions and signed copies. Our new hobby now is to design every room of our house beautifully. That will take quite while, but we are not in a hurry. We are curious about different design ideas and we will learn new skills.

Great as always, I was writing poems in Hindi when I was young and was living in Delhi, then I left Delhi for a new job, lived in jaipur and then at various project sites, I published house journals, organised kavi sammelans and cultural programs, but writing poetry could not happen, after retirement I took up several hobbies, first blogging, then a fresh spell of poetry writing and yet the activity taking most of my time is singing and uploading my videos on various sites, let’s see which activity lasts longer.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

What a wonderful journey! 😊 It seems the creative side of you has always been there, just waiting for the right time to return. 🤍 Wishing you many more poems, songs, and stories ahead! 🦋✨

To fully comprehend life as it unfouldeds us sit still and observe what is happening…. When you REALISE you will understand.. empower yourself. You will feel and be stronger. There is a sound that must be heard again in our nation: the sound of prayer, purity and wholehearted devotion to God. I heard this prophetic message in my spirit tonight after preaching

In Jeremiah 19, Judah had reached a dangerous place. They had known the Lord, experienced His goodness, and been called by His name, yet they turned away from Him and began to worship other gods. They compromised their worship, polluted what was sacred, and eventually found themselves surrounded by threats from nations like Assyria, Babylon and Egypt. The issue was not just the nations around them. The deeper issue was what had happened within them.

When a people abandon God, things that were established by covenant become vulnerable to destruction. When those who are called to represent God begin bowing to other gods, pursuing power, money, influence, recognition and the systems of the world, they lose the purity required to carry His presence faithfully.

This is a word to the people, the families, the Church, the marketplace, the government, the education system, the media, the entertainment industry, the business sector and every sphere of influence in our nation:

Do not disgrace the altar of prayer by living contrary to the God you pray to. We cannot pray for revival while entertaining compromise.
We cannot ask God to transform our nation while refusing to allow Him to transform us.

We cannot build industries and institutions in the name of God while operating through corruption, dishonesty, greed, manipulation and immorality. We cannot carry the language of the Kingdom while bowing to the gods of this age.

God is calling His people back to purity. Back to integrity, holiness, the fear of the Lord. Back to prayer that is not just a religious activity, but a life that agrees with what we pray.

The answer for our nation is not just better policies, stronger economies or greater influence. We need people who will stand before God with clean hands and pure hearts. Let the intercessors arise. Let the women pray! Let the men pray! Let families pray! Let business leaders pray! Let those in government pray!!

Let those in education, healthcare, science, media, entertainment and every sphere of society pray. But as we pray, let us also consecrate ourselves. May God purify the altars of our nation. May He expose every idol that has taken His place. May He cleanse His Church from compromise. May He restore integrity to leadership. May He restore righteousness to our institutions. May He restore holiness to the marketplace. May He restore covenant consciousness to families.

And may those who carry the name of Christ become people whose private lives do not contradict their public prayers. We will not disgrace the altar of prayer. We will not use prayer as a cover for compromise. We will not ask God to bless what He has instructed us to surrender. We will return to the Lord with our whole hearts.

“Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. — Malachi 3:7

South Africa, return to the Lord. People of God, return to the altar. Industries and institutions, return to righteousness. Church, return to holiness. Intercessors, pray—but let your life become the prayer. There is still a people who will refuse to bow. There is still a people who will rebuild the altar. There is still a people who will stand in the gap.

And there is still a God who responds when His people humble themselves, turn from their wicked ways and seek His face. May purity precede power! May holiness precede influence! May integrity accompany prayer. And may our nation encounter God again.

Curiosity seems to have been the real thread connecting all those chapters. I wonder if the guitar is about to become the next unexpected chapter in that journey. Whatever happens, the first chord is already a good beginning.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

“I like being a beginner” is the line that reframes the whole post – it turns the pile of half-finished crochet and glass painting from evidence of flakiness into evidence of curiosity. That is a much kinder read, and I think a truer one. Also very familiar: our house has a graveyard of abandoned kits that everyone swears they will come back to.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, I love that “graveyard of abandoned kits”! 😂 Maybe those unfinished hobbies are simply little reminders of all the things we were curious enough to try. 🦋✨
