Success in Life: What Really Matters?

Success in life means enjoying family, friendship, personal growth, achievements, and everyday happiness.

What’s something you’ve done that your past self would be proud of?

What If We’re Already Successful In Life?

Today’s prompt got me thinking about what success in life really means. And honestly, I wasn’t sure where to begin.

What’s something you’ve done that your past self would be proud of?

I do have an achievement I’m proud of. When I was beginning the second chapter of my career, I won the Best Documentation Award at a college fashion show. It felt wonderful! Starting afresh and discovering that you can still surprise yourself is quite a feeling.

But does success always have to come with an award, a certificate, or a grand announcement?

Apparently, life has performance reviews too. And nobody even tells us the marking scheme! 😂

What about the day your child looks at you and says, “Mumma, you’re the best”?

What about having a husband who is always ready to bring happiness into your life, or friends who can turn an ordinary day into a memorable one with nothing more than laughter and silly conversations?

What about family members who stand by us, celebrate our little victories, and make life’s difficult moments a little easier?

And what about those days when life throws an unexpected challenge our way, but we somehow find the courage to pick ourselves up and move forward?

There are no trophies for these things. Yet, they make our lives richer in ways no certificate can measure.

Success in Life Is More Than Achievements

I’ve realised that success doesn’t always mean reaching the highest position, earning the most money, or becoming someone the world admires.

Of course, dreams matter. Achievements matter. We should celebrate the things we work hard for. But we can aspire for more without overlooking the beauty of what we already have.

Sometimes, success is learning something new. Sometimes, it’s finding the courage to begin again. And sometimes, it’s simply sitting with a cup of coffee, laughing with your favourite people, and thinking, Life is good.

No big announcement. No motivational music playing in the background. Just a happy heart!

Perhaps my younger self would be proud of the award I won. But I hope she’d also be happy to see that I’m still learning, creating, dreaming, and finding joy in the little things.

And if someone introduces a Best at Enjoying Life Award, please let me know. I might have a chance! 😂

Because here’s what I believe: success isn’t just about how high we climb; it’s also about how happily we live along the way.

We don’t have to wait until we’ve achieved something extraordinary to feel proud of ourselves. Our lives are happening right now, in the relationships we nurture, the challenges we overcome, the dreams we pursue, and the little moments we sometimes forget to appreciate.

Maybe the real question isn’t just whether our past selves would be proud of us.

Maybe it’s whether our present selves are making time to enjoy the life we’ve worked so hard to build.

And perhaps, years from now, we’ll look back at this very chapter and smile, realising that we had more success in life and more to be proud of than we ever imagined.

Now, I’d Love to Hear From You! ❤️

What’s something you’ve done that your past self would be proud of?

Was it an achievement, a difficult phase you overcame, a dream you pursued, or the beautiful life you’ve built with your family and friends?

Share your story in the comments. Let’s remind one another that success comes in many forms, and every meaningful little victory deserves to be celebrated.

And if this post made you smile, share it with someone who needs a gentle reminder that they’re doing better than they think.

What a beautiful perspective on success! ❤️ I truly believe that success is not measured only by awards, money, or professional achievements, but also by the love we share, the relationships we nurture, and the courage with which we face life’s challenges. Your line about aspiring for more without overlooking the beauty of what we already have is especially meaningful. Perhaps we are already successful in many ways, but we are too busy chasing the next milestone to recognize it. Let us keep dreaming while remaining grateful for the blessings we already enjoy.

_Nobody is going to build your life for you. Your dreams need your discipline, not your excuses. A true friend doesn’t compete with you, lie about you, or celebrate your failures or mistakes. They’re there to support and uplift you, not tear you down. If someone can’t be happy about your success or defend you behind your back, they’re not worth calling a friend._

_Their actions are windows into their character. Protect your time. Time and energy spent on fake people are time and energy stolen from your future._

_Trust God’s removal. Sometimes, rejection is God’s protection. The right people never need reminders to love you, they know your worth and never risk losing it. Not everything you lose is a loss. Sometimes, certain things or certain people need to leave your life for you to grow._

What a beautiful piece! I love it. This made me laugh ” And if someone introduces a Best at Enjoying Life Award, please let me know. I might have a chance! 😂”. I hope you always enjoy life and live it to the fullest, and may god bless you and you’re family.

I’m finishing up my writing for today right now, but I am so proud that I earned two degrees in Criminal justice. The younger me would have never thought I’d accomplish that and I always said college wasn’t for ,e, but I proved myself wrong. 🙂

This is a wonderful post and I agree with it so much.
    Congrats on your achievements.

Very thought provoking presentation. Life is a journey, sometimes a simple walk, sometimes travel by bus, car, train or aeroplane.
The milestones we reach matter with reference to where we started from and how we are moving.
Dreams of a person are limited by his or her social and economic status.
Thus success has different meanings for different people.
However how much love and respect a person earns in life may also be a measure of success.

After getting a degree and years of professional training, and a successful, career in IT where, in my last and long-term job, I was a considered to be the ‘go to person’ for the core systems by everyone who wanted answers rather that ego-building, I feel I retired successful. Not at the highest possible position, but at comfortable and unstressed position with a good reputation.
With a happy and successful marriage, two successful daughters and young grandchildren, I am having a great retirement and getting great pleasure from my hobbies and DIY projected.

About 30 years a go, I was part of a group that was learning to ‘chase success’, when a friend on the course commented that all the hype of moving ahead, every action being to build your public success, etc that we were being exposed to had made him feel guilty at just taking a day out to enjoy a picnic in the bush. I realised then that we needed to enjoy and find success in the journey, not just chase future power and wealth. That shift in my mindset made all the difference.
