Built by Birth. Edited by Life.

Built by Birth. Edited by Life – a reflective illustration about life’s experiences, personal growth, and self-discovery by Nihshabd.

Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?

I’ve seen this debate so many times that I wouldn’t be surprised if Life started it just to entertain itself.

.

Are we shaped by our experiences…
…or by who we already are?

.

I think we’ve been asking the wrong question all along.

.

We’re Built by Birth. Edited by Life.

.

Everything that happens after that is simply another revision.

.

When we’re born, life hands us a rough draft.
A little courage.
A little fear.
A heart that trusts far too easily.
An ego that occasionally believes it knows everything.
No map.
No instruction manual.
No “Ctrl + Z.”

.

Just a cheerful, “Good luck. You’ll figure it out.”

And then people happen.

.

Some walk into our lives carrying sunshine.
Some arrive looking like sunshine…

.

until they quietly become a power cut.
Some stay.
Some leave.
Some leave… while taking a piece of us with them.
Life never really warns us which is which.

.

It simply smiles and says,
“Character development.”

.

Life has terrible timing… but an annoyingly good eye for editing.

.

I’ve often wondered…

.

Do heartbreaks make us stronger…
or do they simply introduce us to a version of ourselves we had never met before?

.

Do betrayals make us suspicious…
or were we always the kind of people who loved without checking the expiry date?

.

Maybe experience isn’t the whole story.
Maybe neither are we.

.

Perhaps it’s never just about what happens to us… but also about what happens within us.

The same disappointment visits two people.

.

One closes every door.
The other learns which doors were never worth knocking on.

.

The same criticism breaks one person.
Another quietly thanks it years later.

.

The same betrayal hardens one heart…
and deepens another.

.

Funny, isn’t it?

.

Life gives the same exam…
but we all write different answers.

.

Maybe that’s why no two people come out of the same storm looking alike.

.

Life writes the questions.
Our choices write the answers.

I’ve met people who praised me in public…
and edited my character in private.

.

I’ve also met people who quietly stitched pieces of my confidence back together…
without ever telling me they did.

.

Life introduced me to both.

.

Who I became after meeting them…
that part was mine.

I don’t think experiences arrive to change us.
I think they arrive to reveal us.

.

Just like the tide.
It doesn’t create the ocean.

It simply shows us how deep it has always been.
The waves don’t ask permission.
They come.
They leave.

.

And somehow…

.

the shore is never quite the same.
Neither are we.

Some experiences erase illusions.
Some restore hope.
Some teach us to walk away.
Others remind us why staying is sometimes the braver choice.

.

Every joy adds a sentence.
Every loss strikes one out.

.

Every unexpected kindness writes an entirely new paragraph.
Without realizing it, we keep becoming newer editions of ourselves.

.

Not perfect.
Just… a little wiser than yesterday.

So…
are we shaped more by our experiences…
or by who we are?

.

I still can’t choose.

.

Because life may hold the editor’s pen…
but it can only edit the pages we were born with.

.

Perhaps that’s the quiet truth.
We don’t become someone else.

.

We slowly discover who was hiding beneath every revision.
Still imperfect.
Still learning.
Still wonderfully unfinished.
Built by Birth. Edited by Life.

.

Until the next whisper… 🤍

Thank you so much Jonathan🤍 I’m really happy that this simple thought stayed with you. Sometimes the simplest words carry the deepest truths. I’m grateful it resonated with you. 💛✨

Remind me to never sit on a chair when reading you R! I am always falling off then laughing hysterically!

“…until they quietly become a power cut.” Yeh kya tha!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 How do you know those buggers who caused massive short circuits in my life!! Bachke rehna padega aapse!🙊

This post again closely walks beside mine where I conclude Life is the winner in this game of tug of war between experiences and identity. It is just experiencing itself through us. We are just pawns in this hilarity. And it’s not that bad… I like playing the fool anyway!😌 And that makes me a genius at hacking Life I guess! 🤓

I love this post Rajeshwariji. It’s beautiful, humourous, profound : A well rounded lesson from Life itself. Joh samjha, woh Narayan. Nahi samjha, toh Narayan! Narayan!!

😂😂 You nearly had me laughing out loud with this! Please keep a cushion nearby before reading Nihshabd from now on. 🤭

And yes… we’ve all met those “power cuts,” haven’t we? 😄 They arrive like permanent fixtures and disappear without warning, but somehow they end up teaching us more than the steady lights ever do.

I smiled so much reading your perspective. “Life experiencing itself through us” is such a beautiful thought, and I love how you’ve embraced playing the fool with such joy—it sounds more like wisdom than foolishness to me. 😊

Thank you for always reading with your whole heart, laughing at the jokes, finding the deeper layers, and then adding your own. Your comments feel like little essays that continue the conversation, and I cherish every one of them. 🤍✨

Little essays that continue the conversation… WOW! I like. Sometimes I wonder if my comments hog up too much space.. like as if they are posts that need their own space… 🙊🙈. Bur I simply stop wondering and pour myself into these comment sections. I am happy you find them conversational. It is in a way… I always write while I speak with the invisible you in my screen. So in many ways it is a direct one on one connection. Thank you for understanding this weird side of me too.

We can hold the life pen and write our own life, isn’t it? We have that choice, but do we want to write it the good way….that’s what matters….🙂

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Absolutely. 🙂 We may not choose every chapter life hands us, but we always have a say in how we write the next one. The pen is in our hands—it’s our choices, our courage, and our kindness that give the story its meaning. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective. 🤍✨

What a profoundly beautiful post, Rajeshwari ji! ✨

“Built by Birth. Edited by Life” perfectly captures that delicate dance between our innate selves and the revisions life keeps making—sometimes with gentle kindness, sometimes with sharp cuts that sting but ultimately shape us into wiser, deeper versions of who we already were. Your metaphors (the rough draft at birth, the “power cut” people, the tide revealing the ocean’s depth) land so elegantly and truthfully. I found myself nodding, smiling, and feeling seen throughout.

It reminds me how every heartbreak, betrayal, or unexpected kindness isn’t rewriting our story from scratch—it’s slowly uncovering the authentic chapters that were there all along. Your words feel like a warm, wise conversation with a dear friend who just “gets it.”

Thank you for this gem. I’m already looking forward to the next whisper from your blog. Keep shining your light—your reflections are a gift to anyone navigating their own edits. 🤍

    Looking forward to more! 🧿

Thank you so much Aniruddha ji for this incredibly thoughtful comment. 🤍 It means so much to know that the piece made you feel seen that is one of the greatest gifts a writer can receive. I loved your thought that life’s joys and heartbreaks don’t rewrite our story but gently uncover the chapters that were always there. That’s beautifully said.

Your kindness and encouragement truly touched my heart. Thank you for walking alongside my words with such warmth. I’m so grateful you’re here, and I hope the next whisper from Nihshabd speaks to your heart just as deeply. 💛✨

This is absolutely beautiful, Rajeshwari. You’ve taken a timeless debate and turned it into poetry—the imagery of the tide revealing the ocean’s depth, and life holding the editor’s pen but only working with the pages we were born with, is profound.

I love your conclusion: we don’t become someone else; we just slowly discover who was hiding beneath every revision. That line alone is worth sitting with. Your words remind us that while life writes the questions, the beauty lies in how we choose to answer them. Thank you for sharing this—it’s a piece that lingers long after reading. 🤍

Thank you so much Srikanth ji🤍 Your words truly touched my heart. I’m especially grateful that those metaphors stayed with you, because they carried the very heart of what I was trying to express. I love that you saw it not as a debate, but as a journey of discovering ourselves, one revision at a time. Thank you for reading so thoughtfully and for leaving such a beautiful reflection. It means more to me than you know. 💛🦋✨

    Dear Rajeshwari,

What a beautifully reflective piece. I especially loved the thought, “Life may hold the editor’s pen… but it can only edit the pages we were born with.” It gently dissolves the old debate by showing that neither our nature nor our experiences stands alone. One offers the manuscript; the other patiently shapes its margins.

Your reflections also remind us that life rarely changes the essence of who we are it simply reveals it, one chapter at a time. Every joy, every disappointment, every unexpected act of kindness becomes less a force of transformation and more a quiet invitation to meet ourselves more honestly. The metaphor of the tide revealing the ocean’s depth is especially beautiful; it lingers long after the words have been read.

Thank you for another heartfelt reminder that we are not finished creations, but living manuscripts still imperfect, still learning, and still discovering the quiet truth hidden beneath every revision. A deeply thoughtful and comforting read.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Vijay ji, I’m truly touched by the care with which you read this piece. 🤍 Your beautiful interpretation felt like a continuation of the conversation rather than just a response. I especially loved your thought that life doesn’t change our essence it simply invites us to meet it more honestly. That’s such a profound way of looking at it.

Thank you for walking alongside my words with such grace and for adding your own wisdom to them. Comments like yours make writing feel less like speaking into the silence and more like sharing a quiet conversation. Deeply grateful.💛🦋✨

What a beautifully crafted and profoundly insightful reflection! 🤍

I was captivated from the very first line. The phrase “Built by Birth. Edited by Life.” is brilliantly simple, yet it carries immense philosophical depth. It beautifully captures the delicate interplay between our innate nature and the experiences that shape our journey.

Your writing is filled with memorable metaphors. I especially loved, “Life writes the questions. Our choices write the answers.” That single sentence reminds us that while we cannot always control our circumstances, we are always responsible for our response. Equally powerful is the image of the tide revealing the ocean’s depth rather than creating it—a wonderful reminder that life’s challenges often uncover strengths we never knew we possessed.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

This is one of those comments I’ll come back to and read again. 🤍 Thank you Verma ji for understanding not just the words, but the silence and thought behind them. Your interpretation added another layer of meaning to what I had written, and that is a beautiful feeling for any writer. Grateful beyond words. 💛🦋✨

Lovely writing. We are a seed at the time of birth. Every seed has inherent programming but changes while interacting with the environment could be amazing.
I remember an example a person whose father was a drunkard became like him and said what else could I become but his brother said that seeing his condition I decided that whatever I may become but wouldn’t be like him.
So there are several factors that impact the result, from the beginning, environment, the company we keep and our own resolve.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Beautiful perspective. 🤍I really liked the seed analogy and the story of the two brothers. It perfectly shows that while life shapes us, our choices shape us too. Thank you for sharing this. 🤍🦋✨
