How to Make Time for Self-Care When Life Gets Busy

How do you make time for self-care when life is already so busy? Between work, family, household responsibilities, appointments, errands, and all those little things that somehow become our responsibility, finding time for ourselves can feel almost impossible.

We know we need to rest, eat properly, move our bodies, sleep well, and occasionally do something just because we enjoy it. But knowing that and actually making time for self-care are two different things.

The truth is, most of us are not going to suddenly find a completely free afternoon waiting for us. So instead of waiting for the perfect time, perhaps we need to start using the small pieces of time we already have.

How to Make Time for Self-Care in 10 or 15 Minutes

Self-care doesn’t have to mean spending an entire morning at a spa or following a complicated wellness routine.

Start small.

Have your morning tea or coffee without checking your phone. Sit in the balcony for ten minutes. Take a short walk. Read a few pages of a book. Listen to music. Stretch your body. Simply sit quietly and do nothing for a while.

Ten minutes may not sound like much, but ten peaceful minutes can feel surprisingly good when the rest of your day belongs to everyone else.

Simple Self-Care Ideas Using the Time You Already Have

Sometimes we don’t need to find extra time. We just need to look at our existing routine differently.

Waiting for the water to boil? Put on your favourite song.

Going for a grocery run? Take a few minutes afterward to enjoy a coffee.

Already taking a walk? Leave your phone in your bag and actually notice what is around you.

Have fifteen minutes before leaving for an appointment? Read instead of automatically opening social media.

Self-care can fit into ordinary moments. It doesn’t always need a separate space in your schedule.

Put yourself on your own calendar

We schedule meetings, doctor’s appointments, school events and even reminders to pay bills.

Why not schedule a little time for ourselves?

It could be just 20 minutes in the evening for reading, writing, walking, drawing, gardening, or simply sitting with a cup of tea.

And when that time comes, try not to immediately give it away because something else has appeared.

Your time matters too.

Learn to say “not today”

One of the biggest reasons we run out of time is that we keep saying yes.

Yes to another favour.

Yes to another commitment.

Yes to something we could easily have done tomorrow.

You don’t have to say no to everything. Sometimes saying, “I can’t do it today, but I’ll see if I can do it later,” is enough.

Protecting a little space in your day isn’t selfish. It is simply recognising that your energy is limited.

Have a “minimum self-care” day

Not every day will be productive.

Some days you will have plenty of energy. Other days, getting through the day itself may feel like an achievement.

On those days, forget the elaborate routine.

Drink enough water.

Eat a proper meal.

Take a shower.

Get some fresh air.

Rest when you need to.

Go to bed a little earlier.

Call someone who makes you feel good.

That’s enough.

Self-care doesn’t have to look beautiful or Instagram-worthy to be useful.

Don’t make self-care another task to complete

This is perhaps the most important part.

We already have enough things on our to-do lists. We don’t need another list that says:

☐ Exercise
☐ Meditate
☐ Journal
☐ Read
☐ Drink eight glasses of water
☐ Sleep eight hours

And then feel guilty because we managed only two of them.

Self-care should support your life, not make you feel like you are failing at one more thing.

Some days you may want to exercise. Some days you may want to sleep. Some days you may want company. And some days, you may simply want everyone to leave you alone for an hour.

Listen to that difference.

So, how do you make time for yourself?

Don’t wait for life to become completely quiet.

It probably won’t.

Instead, start with the little spaces.

Ten minutes with your coffee.

Fifteen minutes with a book.

A short walk.

A favourite song.

A quiet room.

A conversation that makes you laugh.

A hobby you had forgotten about.

Or simply doing nothing without feeling guilty about it.

Because making time for self-care isn’t necessarily about having more time.

Sometimes it’s about finally accepting that a small part of the time you already have belongs to you too.

What about you?

How do you make time for yourself when life gets busy?

Is it your morning coffee, a walk, reading, writing, music, a hobby—or simply a few quiet minutes alone?

I’d love to know what your little self-care ritual looks like. Share it in the comments; your simple idea might be exactly what someone else needs today.

Rajeshwari, this was such a gentle and grounding read. 💛

I love how you’ve reframed self-care—not as another elaborate routine to squeeze into an already full day, but as something that lives inside the life we already have. The idea of using the small pieces of time we already own, rather than waiting for a perfect free afternoon that never comes, hit home for me.

A few lines I’m going to carry with me:

🌿 “Ten peaceful minutes can feel surprisingly good when the rest of your day belongs to everyone else.”

🌿 “Self-care should support your life, not make you feel like you are failing at one more thing.”

And the “minimum self-care day” — that’s such a kind and realistic reminder. Some days, just drinking enough water and going to bed a little earlier genuinely is enough.

Thank you for reminding us that a small part of the time we already have belongs to us too. Saving this one to come back to on the busy days. 🙏

A thoughtful reminder that self-care is not a luxury but a quiet responsibility toward ourselves. We need not wait for life to become less demanding; even a few moments of stillness, lived with awareness and without guilt, can restore our inner balance. Caring for ourselves is not taking time away from life; it is learning to live it more consciously. 🙏
