Have I Ever Regretted Reading a Book? My Bookish Guilt 😂

A woman reading a book late at night with bookish guilt

Have you ever regretted reading a book — which one and why?

Have I ever regretted reading a book?

Honestly, not really. I love reading books far too much to blame the book. But I do have a little bookish guilt and it usually begins with four completely harmless words:

“Just one more chapter.”

That sentence has ruined more sleep than caffeine ever could. 😂

I’ll start reading at night thinking I’ll read for twenty minutes. Then I look at the clock and somehow it’s 1:30 a.m. The sensible part of my brain whispers, “You have to wake up tomorrow.”

The reader in me replies, “Yes, yes. After this chapter.”

And of course, there is always another chapter.

The Trouble With “Just One More Chapter”

Sometimes a book is so good that everything else suddenly becomes negotiable.

Messages can wait.
Chores can wait.
Sleep can definitely wait.

Apparently, everything in the real world understands that I am currently busy.

I have absolutely no idea how a simple reading session turns into a full-scale negotiation between my responsibilities and a fictional story. 😂

And if someone asks, “Are you still reading?”

The answer is usually:

“Almost finished.”

Which, in book-lover language, can mean anything from ten minutes to another two hours.

My Real Bookish Guilt

The funny thing is, I don’t regret the book.

I regret what happens around it.

I regret promising myself that I would read for only half an hour.

I regret checking the time.

I regret remembering that I have to wake up early.

And I definitely regret saying, “This is the last chapter.”

Because we all know that is a lie.

There is always a next chapter.

And sometimes there is an epilogue.

And sometimes there are acknowledgements that I suddenly feel emotionally obligated to read too. 😂

When the Book Finally Ends

Then comes the strange part.

I finally finish the book, close it, and expect to feel productive.

Instead, I just sit there staring at the last page.

Now what?

The characters I have spent hours with are gone. The story is over. And real life suddenly feels suspiciously less interesting.

So perhaps my biggest bookish guilt isn’t staying up too late.

It’s becoming emotionally attached to people who don’t even exist.

And then wondering why I miss them. 😂

Have I Ever Regretted Reading a Book?

No.

Not the books.

Never the books.

I only regret believing myself every single time I say:

“Just one more chapter.”

Because that sentence has never once meant one chapter.

It is basically a legally binding contract with 2 a.m. 😂📚

Now tell me how many times has “just one more chapter” turned into “why is the sun rising?” And what’s your biggest bookish guilt?

Until The Next Whisper,

—Rajeshwari 🧿💕

If I’m not enjoying a book after a few chapters, I rarely continue. I accept that some books just aren’t for me.

Absolutely! 😊 Not every book is meant for every reader, and that’s perfectly okay. 📚🦋✨

I had the same legally binding contract in high school, and as a result, I had to start wearing glasses, so I’m more responsible now 😂

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Same here! 😂 But sadly, I’m still signing that same contract with my books. At least you learned your lesson… I clearly haven’t! 😂📚🤓

I get it! It’s hard to resist 😂😂 My lesson was reinforced by migraines, otherwise I wouldn’t be so diligent! 😂

Haha, I can imagine! 🤭😂 At least now you know what works for you 🦋✨

Wow, it felt like you put all my thoughts into words 🥰 😂 but I’ll say another bookish guilt I have.. is getting angry at a certain plot twist I didn’t expect and then becoming aggravated with this imaginary people 😂 and at myself and neglecting the book for weeks, only to come back when I’m calm and I want to know how they’ll get out of the plot and navigate their life around it.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Hahaha, I can totally relate! 😂 Sometimes we need a little cooling-off period before we can forgive those imaginary people and pick the book up again. And of course, curiosity eventually wins! 🦋✨📚

This made me smile because “just one more chapter” is probably the biggest lie every book lover tells themselves! 😂📚 I don’t think we regret the books either; we regret the lost sleep, the ignored responsibilities, and the realization that it’s suddenly 2 a.m. 😄 And that feeling of missing fictional characters after finishing a book? So beautifully relatable. A wonderful and wonderfully honest read! ❤️📖

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Exactly! 🤍 We don’t regret the books we regret checking the clock at 2 a.m. and realizing what we’ve done! And yes, missing fictional characters afterward is such a real book-lover problem.🦋✨📚

Almost finished” meaning anywhere from ten minutes to two hours is way too accurate 😂 This is basically my autobiography.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

So true! “Almost finished” has a very flexible definition depending on the task. 🤍This made me laugh way too relatable! 😄🦋✨

      1. Sheknowsallblog Avatar

Ha, “flexible definition” is exactly right 😂 Glad it hit home! 🦋

“Just one more chapter” has definitely betrayed me too! Somehow that one chapter always turns into another hour or two.

And yes, finishing a good book can leave real life feeling a little dull afterwards!

    So, what’s your latest 2 a.m. book?

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, so true! 😂 “Just one more chapter” is probably the biggest lie we tell ourselves as readers. 🤍And yes, that post-book emptiness is so real! 📚🦋✨

“Just one more chapter” has cost me more sleep than any early flight ever has, and that’s saying something. The reframe is right too — the regret is never the book, it’s the 1:30am arithmetic you do afterwards knowing exactly how tomorrow will feel. Worth it roughly nine times out of ten.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, absolutely! 😂 The book is never the problem… it’s looking at the clock at 1:30 a.m. and realizing you’ve done this to yourself again! 📚🦋😴

Yes. Sometimes finishing a good book feels like saying goodbye to people we have spent so much time with. Then comes the difficult task of finding the next book.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

So true! 🤍 Finishing a really good book feels like saying goodbye to old friends. And then comes the struggle of finding the next one! 😂🦋📚

  9. Klausbernd Avatar

We know this ‘just one more chapter’ as well. But it’s our experience that we can learn quite a lot from rubbish books. We learned a lot from them why something doesn’t work in a novel f.e.
But we have a lot of time for reading. We don’t now how we would see it when having limited reading time.
    The Fab Four of Cley
    🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Absolutely! 😊 Sometimes even a rubbish book can teach us what doesn’t work, which is a lesson in itself. And having plenty of reading time definitely makes it easier to experiment with different books! 📚🦋✨

  10. Lalitha Avatar

I don’t allow anything to compromise with my sleep schedule. So there haven’t been many books that have made me say Just one more chapter. But one book I remember that I let mess with my disciplined life was One hundred years of solitude. I completely forgot the world and became a part of the household of Buendia. The withdrawal pangs… My god! Don’t remind me! I was listless for days after the book ended.

But yes… I do share the guilt you write. Sometimes I do let a book control the chores that gets done. I tell myself the world of words need me more than chores. 🤓🥹 We all know where that leads us to… 😅😅

I loved your take R! The guilt of letting life slide past us while we are immersed in a book is precious! It shows how much we value not just the written word but the world we all create with those very words! Ah! The joy… Unparalleled!

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, I can totally relate Lalitha! 😂 When a book pulls you so deeply into its world, even the chores suddenly feel less important. And that empty feeling after finishing a book you’ve truly connected with is so real. It’s amazing how a few hundred pages can make us feel like we’ve actually lived another life and then leave us missing that world when it ends. 🦋📚

  11. hoshinoinochi Avatar

The part of finishing a book and feeling empty/sad bc you won’t spend more time with characters you got attached to… 100% true for me as well.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Absolutely! 🤍 It’s such a strange feeling when you know you’ll never spend time with those characters again. You finish the book, but a little part of you still stays behind in their world. 📚🦋🥹

  12. Vijay Srivastava Avatar

Rajeshwari ji, perhaps the real guilt of a book lover is not reading too much, but caring too deeply. A good book quietly steals our sleep, our attention, and sometimes even a little piece of our heart and yet, when we finally close it, we are grateful that it did.

Your “Just one more chapter” perfectly captures the irresistible magic of reading. The funny part is that we know exactly where those words will lead, yet we keep saying them anyway! 😂

And perhaps that is the greatest gift of a beautiful book: its characters may not exist in our world, but the emotions they leave behind certainly do. We don’t regret reading the story; we only regret reaching the last page.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

You’ve put this so beautifully Vijay ji! 🤍 Maybe that’s what makes a book truly special when its characters stop feeling like characters and become a little part of our lives. We may reach the last page, but the emotions, memories, and that beautiful world stay with us for a long time. And honestly, that’s one kind of reading guilt I’ll never complain about. 🥹📚🦋✨

  13. DimmaJo Blog Avatar

I agree with you, Nihshab, that just one chapter has caused so many sleepless nights than ever 😂. I believe that when you’re reading an interesting book, everything else at the moment doesn’t matter, because just one chapter will keep on going on and on and will never end until the end of the book.

  14. Outrageous Monk Avatar

Calling ‘just one more chapter’ a legally binding contract with 2 a.m. is the most accurate thing I’ve read all week! 😂 I swear time accelerates the second the house goes quiet and a book gets good. That moment of looking at the clock, doing the mental math on how many hours of sleep you have left, and choosing the next chapter anyway is a universal bookworm ritual. Fantastic and so relatable post, Rajeshwari! 📚✨

oddly, just the opposite, I sometimes regret not following through reading a few books….I trying to remember one book that I started reading, and thought ‘why am I reading this’ but a little way further into it I was glad I kept going

Yes twice once was a religious book about warfare but he never got to the point. The second was Novel it just went nowhere and made no sense at all.

  18. Hazel Avatar

Thankfully, I’m not like this. When it’s my bedtime, it’s my bedtime period. I read almost all day for all the blogs and books I have, so at night, I’m tired already reading 😁

I think I don’t have an advice to you.🤭 In the end, no regret!

  19. Hug in a bite Avatar

I’m the same when i start reading I can’t stop and i get too emotional while reading i might cry. And i get too attached to the characters when when i finish the story i feel like something is wrong as if the world or place I was in came to an end.
Loved reading this and i relate a lot to your answer.

  20. Girish Mani Avatar

It’s there for me too…..once I started reading in the evening and finished the book by morning 3 o clock….I was so immersed in it…..

  21. samaysakshi Avatar

Great habit. I think there is no reason to repent after reading a book, if a book is not interesting for us we may leave it midway and a good book would give us company till it ends.
