The Kindness We Carry

The Kindness We Carry by Nihshabd, featuring a heart-shaped mug, blue butterfly, flowers, and a warm sunset

What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?

What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?

Oh, that’s a dangerous question.

Because how do you choose one moment from a lifetime of little moments that quietly held you together? 😄

And honestly, my memory has suddenly decided to behave like an old cupboard—everything is in there, but finding the right thing may take some time.

When I think of kindness, I don’t think only of grand gestures.

I think of the person who knew I had made a mistake, but chose kindness over an “I told you so.”

The parent who was disappointed, perhaps, but still made sure I knew I was loved.

The friend who listened to the same worry again and again—not because they had a new solution, but because they knew I needed someone to listen.

The teacher who saw a little more in me than I could see in myself.

The person who stayed beside me when I was busy doubting everything—including myself.

Sometimes, they didn’t even say much.

Just a quiet, “You’ll figure it out.”

And somehow, you did.

The Kindness That Stays

Then there are those tiny moments that last far longer than they should.

You slip, and before embarrassment can even arrive, a hand is already there.

You’re getting drenched in the rain, and a stranger moves their umbrella a little closer so you can fit under it.

You look tired, and someone you don’t know asks, “Would you like some water?”

They don’t know your story.

They don’t know your name.

They simply saw another human being who needed a little kindness.

The Mark Kindness Leaves

And perhaps that is why the truly kind people stay with us.

Not because of the magnitude of what they did, but because of what their kindness left behind.

A little courage.

A little warmth.

A little faith in ourselves.

And sometimes, a little more faith in people.

There are people whose kindness has quietly become part of who we are.

We may have forgotten the exact words.

We may not even remember the date.

But we remember how we felt standing next to them.

Safe. Seen. Not alone.

If we tried to write down every such moment, every person who softened a difficult day, every hand that reached out just in time, every voice that said the right thing when we needed it most…

we would run out of pages before we ran out of kindness.

Maybe that is the strange, beautiful thing about kindness.

The giver may think it was just a moment.

The receiver may carry it for years.

And perhaps, without ever knowing it, some of us are already living inside a kindness someone gave us long ago.🦋

And if there is someone whose kindness still lives quietly in your heart, perhaps today is a good day to remember them and tell us about them. ❤️

    Very nice.
The first job i got was merely for rupees 100 per month, not a great amount at that time too, yet i know how much I needed it at that time and I got it through a neighbor at that time, who had contacts in the market.

During my job period an honest officer selected me though there was a person connected to a minister as a candidate and he was sure he is going to grab the job.

There have been so many bosses who loved me and helped me in moving further.

So very difficult to choose one good Samaritan.

Sometimes when you do a very good job, like this your answer to this prompt, you evoke a nostalgic feeling – that warm, sweet, little feeling you get when someone you know draws her umbrella close to shield you from rain as described it stayed with me. Thanks for sharing those experience with us

    That was beautiful, Rajeshwari. 🦋❤️

Your words perfectly capture the quiet, lasting power of kindness. The way you described the “old cupboard” of memories, and the small gestures—like an umbrella held closer or a simple “you’ll figure it out”—is exactly how real, human kindness works. You are right that we usually run out of pages before we run out of kindness, because it’s the feeling of being “safe, seen, and not alone” that stays with us forever.

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt and gentle reflection. Keep sharing that warmth! 😄

Thank you so much Srikanth ji for such a beautiful and thoughtful comment. 🤍 I’m really glad those little moments of kindness touched you. I truly believe it’s often the smallest gestures that stay with us the longest the ones that quietly remind us that we are seen, cared for, and not alone. Your words added another little page to that same cupboard of memories for me. 🦋❤️ Thank you for reading and feeling it so deeply. 😊
