If You Could Live Anywhere in the World | Never Just One Place

If You Could Live Anywhere in the World… I’d Never Choose Just One Place | Nihshabd

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Confession: The day my husband gets a transfer order, I become suspiciously happy. 🤭If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? My answer is never as simple as naming one place.

.

Most people hear the word transfer and immediately think about packing boxes, changing schools, endless paperwork and starting life all over again.

.

I hear transfer and my brain goes,

“Ooo… where are we going this time?” 😄

.

I know.

I sound slightly crazy.

But after all these years, I’ve accepted it. I don’t just enjoy new places…

.

I actually look forward to them.

.

So when today’s prompt asked,

“If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?”

.

I realised something.

I don’t dream about one perfect place.

I dream about the excitement of discovering the next one.

.

I Think Change Is My Favourite Adventure

.

I’ve never been someone who can happily stay in one place forever.

.

After a few years, everything becomes predictable.

.

I know which road has the least traffic.

.

Which grocery shop has the freshest vegetables.

.

Which neighbour will ring the bell without calling first.

.

Which bakery sells the softest bread.

.

And strangely…

.

that’s exactly when I start craving something new.

.

Not because I’m bored.

.

But because I love that feeling of being a beginner again.

.

Thankfully, I married someone who understands that feeling.

.

You know that saying, “Ram milaye jodi…”?

.

That’s us. 🤭

.

One transfer order…

.

Two overexcited people.

.

Every New City Comes With New Stories

.

I’m not saying moving is easy.

.

It’s not.

.

Packing somehow creates three times more things than we actually own.

.

School admissions deserve their own Olympic event.

.

For the first few weeks, we open ten boxes before finding the one thing we need.

.

And somehow…

.

the scissors are never in the box marked “Stationery.” 😂

.

But then comes my favourite part.

.

The first walk around the neighbourhood.

The excitement of discovering a tiny café.

Finding the vegetable market.

Learning shortcuts.

Getting lost anyway.

Smiling at strangers who slowly stop becoming strangers.

.

Every city has its own personality.

Some wake up early.

Some come alive after sunset.

Some welcome you with amazing food.

Others test your patience with traffic.

Every place teaches me something.

.

And every move quietly reminds me that I’m far more adaptable than I thought.

.

If You Could Live Anywhere in the World, Here’s My Answer

.

If you asked me to choose one place for the rest of my life…

.

I’d struggle.

Not because there aren’t beautiful places.

But because I know myself.

.

Sooner or later, I’d look out of the window and wonder,

“I wonder what life is like somewhere else.” 🤭

Maybe that’s why I don’t believe home is a city.

.

Or a house.

Or even an address.’

.

Home is wherever my family is…

and wherever life gives us another chance to begin again.

.

So, if I could live anywhere in the world…

.

My answer would probably disappoint everyone expecting the name of a country.

.

I’d simply say,

“Wherever the next adventure decides to take us.” ❤️

.

And honestly…

I can’t wait to see where that is.

.

Until the next beginning,
Rajeshwari 🧿💕

Nice, I lived like this since my family shifted from place to place often. Same for my education too. I completed my schooling in 5 schools from LKG to 10th. I’m glad that made so many friends….

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

That’s wonderful Girish! 😊 Moving so often really does teach us to adapt and connect with people. Five schools must have given you so many memories and friendships to cherish. 🤍🌸

So true. Home is not just a place, it is the people you share the journey with.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Absolutely! 🤍It’s the people who turn an unfamiliar place into a place that feels like home. 😊🌸

You have a nomadic streak in you. I guess very few people like transfers. You are an exception with a high degree of adaptability. Commendable. Carry on on your voyage of discovery. I am sure it will be more and more exciting 😉

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, maybe I do! 😄 I’ve learned to see every transfer as a new chapter rather than a disruption. Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. Here’s to many more journeys and stories ahead! 😊🌸

You are so completely our kind of people! “One transfer order, two overexcited people” made me grin — and the scissors never being in the box marked “Stationery” is a universal law of moving, I’m convinced. That craving to be a beginner again, the first walk around a new neighbourhood, smiling at strangers who slowly stop being strangers… you’ve captured exactly why some of us can’t sit still. Home as “wherever the next adventure takes us” — couldn’t agree more. Safe travels to the next beginning, Rajeshwari!

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, I think we’ve all accepted that the scissors have a secret talent for hiding! 😄 I’m so happy this resonated with you. There’s something magical about new beginnings and watching unfamiliar places slowly become home. Thank you so much for your lovely words and warm wishes they truly made me smile. ❤️🌸

Love this answer, and a ll your thoughts on home.

In the book I’m working on now, three young girls, 11, 9, 4, have to accept their widowed father’s decision to move to another country, face homesickness, learn to make new lives, including new friendships. They won’t understand theif father’s reason for the move for some time.

My husband has his late mother’s family’s ID cards, from WWII, when constantly on the move, even with small children and newborns. Anywhere with a roof and water had to become home.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much Esther🤍 Your book sounds incredibly moving, and your husband’s family story touched my heart. It beautifully reminds us that sometimes home is less about a place and more about the love and resilience we carry with us. Wishing you all the best with your book! 🦋✨📖

I was just smiling while reading this, Rajeshwari, 🙂 every word, every sentence feels like you are taking me with you on the new adventure.

What struck me the most is this: “Home is wherever my family is…
” And wherever life gives us another chance to begin again,” and I agree with you 💯. Home is family, and family is home. Thank you for making my day

Aww, thank you so much! 😊Your comment truly made my day. I’m so happy you felt like you were on the journey with me that’s the greatest compliment a writer could receive. And yes, I couldn’t agree more… home is family, and family is home. Thank you for reading so thoughtfully. 🦋✨

    Dear Rajeshwari,

I smiled all the way through this one. 😊

Some people collect souvenirs from places they visit; you seem to collect stories from places you live. That is a rare gift.

I loved the thought that home is not an address but the people who make every new place feel familiar. Every transfer may begin with cartons, confusion and missing scissors, but it quietly ends with new friendships, favourite tea stalls, familiar streets and memories that eventually become impossible to leave behind.

Perhaps that is the beauty of life. We often search for the perfect destination, while life gently teaches us that joy is found in the journey itself. Every new city becomes another chapter, every farewell makes room for another hello, and every beginning reminds us that we are capable of growing in places we never imagined.

Your post isn’t really about changing cities; it’s about embracing change with curiosity instead of fear. And that perspective transforms every transfer order into an invitation from life itself.

Wishing you many more unexpected destinations, unforgettable stories, and the same childlike excitement that says, “Where are we going this time?”

    – Vijay

Thank you so much Vijay ji for such a thoughtful comment. 💛 Reading your words felt like receiving a little gift. I absolutely loved your line about collecting stories instead of souvenirs
I think I’ll carry that with me for a long time. 😊 Thank you for reading with such care and for understanding the heart behind my post. Comments like yours make this journey even more meaningful. 🦋✨

Very nice sharing. Yes there are so many preparations to be made for shifting with family and then settling at a new place , but change of place always exciting. As the famous poem says – come I may but go I must.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much! 😊 Yes, shifting is definitely a lot of work, but every move brings new experiences, new people, and new memories. I suppose that’s the beauty of life we keep moving, growing, and finding a little piece of home wherever we go.🦋🤍✨

    Success doesn’t happen overnight.
Every successful person started with doubts, failures, and obstacles. The difference? They kept going.
One small step every day can completely change your life over time.
Keep building. Keep learning. Keep improving.
Your future self is counting on the choices you make today.

What an attitude! You love opening boxes 🙂! Pun intended! The surprise the new place offers gives you the rush! 😀

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Haha, I love that! 🤍Maybe I enjoy unpacking possibilities even more than unpacking boxes. Every new place comes with its own little surprises, and that’s the part I look forward to the most. 🦋✨

    Keep up the spirits.
We were on the move every three years. I don’t know how my mother managed everything in those times.

Haha! 😄 I don’t know about your mother, but my excitement for a new place somehow gives me the energy to manage it all. 😂❤️

A very different point of view i got to read about people who are in transferable jobs. Your approach to a new place, new people is truly worth appreciating. This is in the true sense called enjoying the ride. Keep going Rajeshwari, discover new places and don’t forget to introduce us all also, through you we will also get to know a lot of new things. Best wishes 👍🌸✨

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Aww, thank you so much Usha! 🤍That means a lot to me. I’ll definitely keep sharing my little adventures and the stories that come with them. I’m so happy to have you along for the journey.🌸🦋✨

Hey! I am one of those who moved a lot too thanks to my Dad! The adventures of moving and calling a new place home was so exciting for the younger me. Now I kinda like where I am. I travel a lot but the journey back is tinged with nostalgia for the brick and mortar home.. And you know how much of a fan I am of nostalgia. But every place I go, everyone I meet and everything I experience will forever carry a small part of me that I call Home.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

I knew this post would resonate with you. ❤️ There’s something so special about growing up with a suitcase always half-packed—it teaches us that home is far more than an address.

I love what you said about every place and every person carrying a small part of you. That’s such a beautiful way to look at life. And yes, now I completely understand why nostalgia finds its way into so much of your writing. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely piece of your journey with me. 🤗✨
