I’ve Been Eighty Since I Was Eight

I’ve Been Eighty Since I Was Eight by Nihshabd featuring butterflies, books, rainbows, and little joys.

What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

I stared at this prompt for a good five minutes, convinced my brain had simply forgotten something.

Then it hit me.

I’ve Been Eighty Since I Was Eight.

That’s the only answer this prompt gave me.

Surely there had to be something.

Bitter gourd? Early mornings? Silence? Staying home? Folding laundry?

Nope.

Maybe that was the answer.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized…

I couldn’t answer this prompt because the things I love today are the very things I loved as a child.

I’ve been suspiciously eighty years old since I was eight.

As a child, I loved hiding in a quiet corner with a notebook, doodling, writing stories, humming old melodies, and creating entire worlds that existed only in my head.

Apparently, my idea of fun has always been… unconventional.

And some things, apparently, never left me.

I still stop to admire butterflies in the garden.

I still collect pretty leaves because… well, someone has to appreciate them.

I still get embarrassingly excited when a rainbow appears, as if the sky made it just for me.

Apparently, I’ve been delightfully easy to please my entire life.

Some people outgrow these little joys.

I seem to have renewed my subscription every year.

I still get ridiculously excited by a blank page.

I can lose track of time while making something with my hands.

The smell of books still deserves its own perfume.

A beautiful sky can stop me mid-sentence.

A handwritten letter still feels more magical than a text message.

Growing up didn’t make me fall in love with these things.

It simply gave me permission to stop apologizing for loving them.

Maybe that’s adulthood.

Not discovering new passions…

But realizing the little “boring” things you loved all along were never boring at all.

Turns out, my younger self wasn’t strange.

She simply knew what made her happy.

Although…

The more I think about it, the less certain I am.

Was I really eighty years old when I was eight…

Or am I still eight at heart?

Because I still stop for butterflies.

I still smile at rainbows.

I still bring home pretty leaves.

I still think clouds tell stories.

I still believe the sky puts on a show just because someone remembered to look up.

Maybe I’ve spent my whole life being an old soul…

With the heart of an eight-year-old.

And honestly?

I hope that never changes.

.

Until the next quiet thought,
—Rajeshwari 🧿💕

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and reflect on it. 🤍I’m so glad the heart of the piece came through. It was really about holding on to the little things that continue to fill life with wonder and accepting that perhaps some souls are simply born a little older while their hearts remain forever young. Your thoughtful summary means a lot to me. 😊🦋🤍✨

    Good afternoon, Rajeshwari ☀️

Such a nice reflection 👍 I really loved how you’ve described your childhood and what you loved since then. When we grow up, we change what we love, like food, music, and so on. I used to not like listening to music since I was a child. Since I grew up, I like listening to different types of music, as long as it’s good. 🎧☺️

I’m so excited for July, the new month ahead! I’ll launch a new blog soon, and that will contain answers to daily prompts and other things. I hope you’ll like my answers 🙏☺️

Have a great start to July! Enjoy your wonderful day ☺️

And congratulations on your new blog! 🎉 I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful space, and I look forward to reading your daily prompt responses. Wishing you all the very best on this exciting new journey. Hope you’re having a beautiful July so far! 🤍✨🦋

    Dear Rajeshwari,

What moved me most was not the nostalgia, but the quiet fidelity to your own soul. Many people spend a lifetime searching for themselves, while your words reveal someone who never truly lost that inner child or that ancient wisdom.

The butterflies, rainbows, fallen leaves, blank pages, and handwritten letters are far more than charming memories. They become gentle reminders that wonder is not something we outgrow; it is something we either protect or abandon. You have chosen to protect it.

Perhaps an old soul is simply one who has learned that life’s greatest miracles rarely arrive with noise. They appear in the ordinary moments that most people hurry past. Your essay invites us to slow down, to notice again, and to remember that growing older need not mean growing away from wonder.

Thank you for this quiet, luminous reflection. It felt less like reading an essay and more like sitting beneath an open sky with someone who still believes that clouds tell stories and in doing so, helps the rest of us remember that they do.

With gratitude and warm regards. 🙏

Vijay ji, I don’t think I have enough words to thank you for this beautiful message. 🥹💙 I read it more than once, and each time it touched my heart a little deeper. To have someone understand not just my words, but the feelings quietly living between them, is a rare gift.
You’re right wonder is something I have always tried to protect, even when life became loud. If my writing reminded you to slow down, look up at the sky, or notice the little miracles hidden in ordinary days, then I feel my words found their true purpose.
Thank you for your generosity, your warmth, and for seeing me so kindly. Your message is one I’ll treasure for a very long time. Sending you my heartfelt gratitude and a big warm hug. 🤍🙏✨

Great sharing, yes often people change a lot with age, they feel it’s the need to be and appear mature, but real charisma is always keeping the child inside active and alive. Thanks a lot for sharing this nice piece.

Thank you so much! 😊 I couldn’t agree more. Growing older is inevitable, but growing out of wonder is optional. ❤️🦋

Thank you for being the kind of person who still looks up. In a world that constantly tells us to grow out of things, you have the rare, rebellious courage to grow into yourself. You are a poet disguised as a regular person, and your quiet noticing of the world is not a quirk—it’s a gift. You knew at eight what most of us spend a lifetime trying to relearn: that joy doesn’t have to be complicated, and magic isn’t just for children.

Keep stopping for the butterflies. Keep bringing home the leaves. Keep being exactly the wonderfully unchanging soul you are. The world needs more people who remember to look up at the sky and smile—because you remind the rest of us that we’re allowed to smile too.

    And between you and me?
    I don’t think you’re an old soul with a child’s heart.
I think you’re a child’s heart that simply refused to let the world make it old.

    Stay magic. ✨

This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read Srikanth ji🥹🤍Thank you for such incredible kindness. Your words are a gift I’ll carry with me for a very long time.
And that last line… “a child’s heart that simply refused to let the world make it old” I’ll never forget it. Thank you for reminding me why it’s always worth looking up. ✨💕

“I couldn’t answer this prompt because the things I love today are the very things I loved as a child.

I’ve been suspiciously eighty years old since I was eight.”

Exactly my thoughts… except for a wee bit of change in the age… I think I was more like 50 since I was 5. My idea of fun was to be left alone with myself. That hasn’t change till date.

The butterflies, pretty leaves, books, rainbows, doodling, trees : I still rave about them like I am discovering them for the forst time. And the skies…I can completely forget the world for a glittery piece of sky that is mauve and sunset yellow! Anyday. Anytime.

I squeal overs gems candy every time I open the fridge and there they are rainbow eyed flirting with me. Its something that has never changed.

What hasn’t changed is that my Dad used to surprise me as a child with them and still manages to restock the fridge with them without me noticing it! It’s like a piece of my childhood standing still in the fridge, frozen in time. Along with the love 💕.

This prompt reminded me how unique I really am… in that much of what was beloved at childhood remains the same even today. The love is more mellow yet fierce!

Your prompt reminded me I am not alone in my corner of the world. There are rare ones like you who are old souls discovering their youth through their time here… I adore this piece Rajeshwariji. Thank you for writing this! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💓💕

Your comment touched my heart Lalitha🥹🤍I smiled through every word, especially the Gems in the fridge and your dad quietly restocking them that is such a beautiful picture of love that never grows old.
I think some of us never outgrow the things that make our hearts light up; we simply learn to cherish them more deeply. Thank you for sharing such a precious part of yourself with me. Knowing my words made you feel a little less alone is the greatest compliment I could receive. Sending you a big hug. 💕🌈🦋

The title of your post is a compact speech of language.
It blends three devices: hyperbole, exaggerating age to show premature maturity; paradox, joining the impossible with meaning; and alliteration (Anuprās), repeating sound for rhythm. Together they create resonance — exaggeration magnifies emotion, paradox deepens reflection, and alliteration makes it memorable

Exaggeration, contradiction, and echo — three voices of language, one rhythm of truth.

    Beautiful post.
