What’s the best way to meet new people while travelling?

I have a very simple theory.

Smile.

Yes, that’s my entire strategy. No networking skills, no carefully rehearsed conversation starters, no “How to make friends while travelling” Google search. 😄

My Very Complicated Travel Strategy 😄

Although, being an introvert, I do need a little courage before I actually use this strategy.

Put me in a new place, surrounded by people I don’t know, and suddenly my mind becomes extremely busy.

Should I say hello?

Will they think I’m being too friendly?

What if they don’t respond?

And then my brain helpfully adds:

Maybe just look at your phone. That’s socially acceptable.

How I Meet New People While Travelling

But I’ve noticed that a smile makes the first step much easier.

I smile at the person sitting beside me, someone I meet at a café, another traveller looking at the same view, or even a stranger whose eyes happen to meet mine.

And quite often, they smile back.

That little exchange changes something.

There is suddenly a tiny bit of familiarity between two people who knew absolutely nothing about each other five seconds ago.

Sometimes it becomes a conversation.

Sometimes it becomes a recommendation for a lovely little place.

Sometimes it becomes a shared laugh.

And sometimes… it remains just a smile.

That’s okay too.

You Never Know Where It Might Lead

I don’t think travelling is about coming home with twenty new friends. I’m not running a friendship collection centre. 😂

For me, it’s about those unexpected little connections that make a journey feel more human.

A smile doesn’t ask questions. It doesn’t expect anything. It simply makes the other person feel a little more comfortable.

And perhaps that matters when you’re somewhere unfamiliar.

Because when everything around you is new, a little warmth feels strangely familiar.

So, if you ask me how to meet new people while travelling, I’d say:

Don’t try too hard to meet people.

Look up from your phone.

Make eye contact.

Smile.

Let the moment decide what happens next.

Maybe nothing will happen.

Maybe you’ll have a two-minute conversation.

Maybe you’ll meet someone whose story stays with you long after the trip.

That’s the fun of it.

You never know what a tiny smile might start.

And honestly, for an introvert, that’s about as adventurous as socialising gets. 😄❤️

What about you?

When you’re travelling, are you the one who happily starts a conversation with strangers, or do you also need a little courage—and perhaps a smile—to break the ice? 😄

Yes, a smile goes a long way. It is not about making new contacts but it is definitely about connecting and learning new things.

Right strategy for introverts like me too, when we smile looking at the other person it may lead to create conversation if the other person is not an introvert.

Honest and heartwarming take on traveling and human connection! In a world that constantly pressures us to be loud networkers and collect endless contacts, your refreshing reminder that you are ‘not running a friendship collection centre’ brings such a genuine smile to the face.As you so perfectly capture, the internal monologue of an introvert stepping into a new place battling overthinking, wondering if a smile is too friendly, and instinctively retreating back to the safety of a phone screen is something so many of us deeply resonate with. Yet, your ‘very complicated strategy’ of simply looking up, making eye contact, and offering a quiet smile proves that magic doesn’t need a guidebook or rehearsal. A smile asks for nothing, expects nothing, and quietly transforms a cold, unfamiliar space into a place wrapped in warmth and unexpected familiarity.Whether a moment blossoms into a deep conversation, a local recommendation, a shared laugh, or simply remains a fleeting exchange that ends in a gentle smile, that is more than enough.writing such a relatable, soul-soothing, and beautifully grounded piece that reminds us all to look up, breathe, and let the journey feel a little more human 💜😊

Thank you so much Krish for such a lovely comment! 🤍 Sometimes, the simplest gestures create the warmest memories. We don’t need to make friends everywhere we go; sometimes, a smile and a little human connection are enough to make a place feel special. 🦋✨

Weirdly, being an anxious introvert, I don’t mind starting a conversation or approaching first, but I agree – a smile is all it takes. If it breaks the ice, that’s lovely. If it stays at that, a shared smile is a win-win!

Beautiful approach. A smile is such a simple way to make someone feel welcome, and you never know, it might be the start of a lovely conversation.

    Beautifully expressed, Rajeshwari ji! 🌹
A smile is the simplest yet most powerful bridge between strangers; it needs no language, no introduction, and no expectations. Sometimes, the smallest gesture opens the door to the most beautiful human connections. Travel broadens our horizons, but a warm smile brings hearts closer.

So beautifully said, Vijay ji 🤍 Sometimes, the smallest gestures leave the deepest impressions. A simple smile can break barriers, make strangers feel like friends, and create connections we never expected. Perhaps that’s the real magic of travelling not just discovering new places, but discovering the warmth and kindness of people along the way. 🌸🦋✨
