Finding Myself Again: My Significant Other Was Me | Nihshabd

A woman looking at herself in a mirror, representing self discovery and finding herself again
Daily writing prompt
How did you meet your significant other?

My Significant Other Was Me ✨

Finding myself again was never a planned journey. For years, I was busy being everything everyone needed me to be—a daughter, a wife, a mother, and a woman who always put others first. Somewhere between responsibilities and expectations, I forgot a small but important part of myself. Until one day, I finally met the person I had been searching for all along—me.

They asked me,
“How did you meet your significant other?”

I smiled.

Because my answer is a little unexpected.

I didn’t meet her at a café.
I didn’t find her in a crowd.
I didn’t recognise her in a first glance.

I met her after years of searching.

She was there all along.

Hidden behind the woman who was always busy taking care of everyone else.

The daughter who learned to adjust.

The wife who tried to create a happy home.

The mother who remembered everyone’s needs before her own.

The woman who knew exactly how everyone liked their tea,
what made everyone happy,
and what everyone needed…

But sometimes forgot to ask herself—

“What do I need?”

She was always there.

But somewhere between responsibilities and expectations,
her voice became softer.

Her dreams waited patiently in a corner.

Her hobbies waited for “someday.”

Her wishes waited for “after everyone is settled.”

And she kept telling herself—

“Later.”

Until one day, she stopped.

Not because the world changed.

But because she did.

She picked up the book she had left unfinished.

She listened to the song she loved.

She created something just because it made her happy.

She sat quietly without feeling guilty.

And slowly…

she heard her own voice again.

The woman she had lost in the noise of everyday life
was finding her way back.

She was not selfish.

She was not changing.

She was simply returning home.

To herself.

So, how did I meet my significant other?

I met her in the mirror after years of looking everywhere else.

She was older.

She was wiser.

She had scars, stories, and a thousand silent battles behind her smile.

But she was beautiful.

Because she was finally free to be herself.

My significant other was never someone I had to find.

She was the woman I had been carrying inside me all along.

And today…

I choose her.

Every single day. ❤️

until the next whisper,

—Rajeshwari 🧿💕

Yay! We wrote mirroring posts again! My significant other is myself! It took me decades to find her but when I did, life took a very different turn! Filled with magic and peace. As I wrote in my response, the road to myself began where the road to the other ended. I absolutely love this response filled with love, empathy and freedom. Bravo Rajeshwariji!! 😍🥲🥹

What a beautiful and deeply empowering interpretation of the prompt. ✨❤️ Turning the idea of a “significant other” inward and discovering that person within yourself is both unexpected and profound.

I was especially touched by the journey from “What does everyone need from me?” to “What do I need?” That simple question can become a turning point in a person’s life. Your reflection beautifully reminds us that caring for others should never require completely losing ourselves.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much Verma ji for this thoughtful and heartfelt response. 🤍 That shift from “What does everyone need from me?” to “What do I need?” truly changes everything. Sometimes, finding ourselves is the most important relationship we can nurture. 🦋✨

The “significant other” represents the moment you stop waiting for permission to choose yourself.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

So beautifully put. 🤍 Choosing yourself is perhaps the most important permission you can ever give yourself.🦋 ✨

  21. umadasila Avatar

Wow! This is such an insightful read, beautifully expressed, Rajeshwari! ❤️ What a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most important person we need to find is ourselves. “She was not selfish. She was simply returning home to herself” truly stayed with me. A deeply touching and empowering read. ✨

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Thank you so much Uma for your beautiful words. 🤍 I’m truly glad that those lines stayed with you. Sometimes, returning to ourselves is not selfishness at all it is simply coming home to the person we had quietly forgotten along the way. 🦋✨

  22. Vijay Srivastava Avatar

Perhaps the deepest relationship in life is the one in which a person finally becomes present to their own inner being.

Responsibilities may shape a life, and relationships may give it meaning, but neither should make us strangers to ourselves. Returning to oneself is not withdrawal from the world; it is discovering the inner ground from which one can meet the world more consciously.

Sometimes, the person we have been searching for is not someone waiting to enter our life, but the self waiting patiently to be recognised.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

This is so beautifully expressed Vijay ji🤍 Sometimes, in the midst of fulfilling responsibilities and caring for everyone around us, we quietly lose touch with the person within. Coming back to ourselves is not selfishness; it is a gentle act of self-recognition. And perhaps, the most meaningful relationship we build is the one where we finally learn to listen, understand, and be present for ourselves. ✨🦋

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

So true. 🤍 At the end of the day, we have to live with the choices we make, not the expectations of others. Better to listen to your heart and live honestly, so there are fewer regrets when you look back. 🦋✨🌿

Reading this is so emotional and I said to myself” are you not passing through this now? I am trying to now focus my attention to my truest dreams especially writing daily in WP when time permits and doing other things that I don’t share with friends, family but that I enjoy doing. This is truly fascinating, beautifully pieced and wonderfully delivered. Thanks
