Songs That Changed My Life (And My Mood!)

Songs that changed my life, music memories, and a nostalgic song diary with a vintage record player.

What’s a song that changed your life?

Songs That Changed My Life (And My Mood!)

Songs. Oh, where do I even begin? If someone asks me to name one of the songs that changed my life, I might have to ask them for a little more time. And probably a cup of filter coffee.

Because honestly, I don’t think I can pick just one.

Songs have been a huge part of my life. They have been with me through so many moods, phases, and moments. When I am happy, sad, stressed, angry, or simply in the mood to do nothing, there is always a song for it.

Sometimes, I listen to old songs and find myself travelling back in time.

Songs That Changed My Life: Childhood Memories

When I was little, dad and I used to sing old songs together. We even had a diary where we would write down the lyrics.

Dad had a voice like Kishore Kumar ji. And me? Well, I was besura then, and I am still besura. Some things, apparently, never change. 😂

But that never stopped me from singing.

Even today, when I hear those old songs, I am reminded of those little moments. Of singing with dad, writing lyrics in our diary, and being completely lost in the music.

I think that’s one of the beautiful things about songs. They hold memories in a way that very few things can.

How Music Became My Meditation

Music has been much more than just memories for me.

Sometimes, I listen to an inspiring song and feel like I can take on the world. Sometimes, I need something peaceful to quieten my mind. And sometimes, I just want to listen to something cheerful, quirky, or ridiculously funny because life is already serious enough.

For me, listening to songs is almost like meditation.

I don’t have to sit quietly and try to stop my thoughts. I just put on a song and let myself be.

There are days when I listen to one song on repeat. And there are days when I need an entire playlist to get through my moods. Apparently, my emotions have very specific musical requirements.

Songs That Make Life a Little Better

I don’t think songs always have to change your life in some grand, dramatic way.

Sometimes, they just make a difficult day a little easier.

Sometimes, they bring back someone you miss.

Sometimes, they make you smile when you didn’t even realise you needed to.

And sometimes, they make you feel like dancing in the middle of the living room, even if your dancing skills are as questionable as your singing.

So, if you ask me which songs changed my life, I would say quite a few.

Some have inspired me.
Some have comforted me.
Some have brought back beautiful memories.
And some have simply made me happy.

Maybe that’s what music does.

It becomes a part of our lives, quietly, without us even realising how much it means to us.

And if there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that I would never want to live in a world without songs.

Even if the world could probably do without my singing. 😂

What about you? Is there a song that takes you back to a special memory, makes you feel better, or has stayed with you through different phases of life?

Amazing to know about your love of songs, Rajeshwari ji!! I enjoyed reading reach word of your post with such intent and interest that I could feel the heart with which you wrote them down!

Thank you so much Aniruddha ji 🤍 I’m glad you enjoyed reading it. It means a lot to me that you could feel the emotions behind my words.🦋✨

I think your father deserves credit for encouraging your singing, but I do wonder how he managed to maintain the Kishore Kumar standard while you were busy being besura! Haha. The diary of lyrics is a lovely memory. And I agree, music need not change our lives in one grand moment. Sometimes it just keeps us company while we get on with life. As for your singing, I hope the neighbours have developed the same appreciation for music as your father!

He he he…I even took singing classes but I’m still besura🥹 My dad somehow managed and so do the people around me because I keep singing something or the other all day. The neighbours and birds though seem less tolerant. 😂 Just kidding! I’m really not good at singing. Thanks for appreciating me 🤍

This is such a heartwarming read 💛 I love how you described music as your meditation and how beautifully you cherish those sweet childhood memories with your dad (complete with the lyric diary). Thank you for sharing such a relatable and soul-soothing piece. Keep singing your heart out, besura or not! 🎶😃

So much fun to read! And yes, I used to do the same thing during my childhood. Whenever I liked a song, my sister and I would write down its lyrics and even record them on our phone’s voice recorder so I could write them down comfortably. 😂 Funny how little things like these become such sweet memories, right? Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Aww, that’s such a lovely memory 🤍 It’s funny how something as simple as writing down song lyrics can bring back so many beautiful childhood memories. Thank you for sharing yours too 🦋✨

Some songs do more than accompany our lives; they become the living echoes of the moments, relationships, and emotions that shape us. Their deepest magic lies not in the melody alone, but in the memories they awaken and the feelings words often fail to express. A beautiful reflection on music as the language of the heart.

Beautifully said Vijay ji 🤍 Some songs hold so many memories and emotions that words can never fully express. They take us back to moments and people we hold close to our hearts.🦋✨

Rajeshwari, this was such a lovely read. The bit about singing old songs with your dad and writing lyrics in a diary honestly made me smile — what a precious memory to carry with you. And your “besura then, besura now” line made me laugh out loud 😂

I love how you described music as a kind of meditation — just putting on a song and letting yourself be. That’s such a beautiful way to put it. You’re so right that songs don’t always have to change life dramatically; sometimes they just make a difficult day a little easier, or bring back someone you miss, or make you dance in the living room with questionable skills.

Thank you for sharing this. It reminded me how quietly important music is in our lives. And for the record, the world may survive without our singing, but it would be far less fun 😊

To answer your question — yes, there are a few songs that instantly take me back to certain phases of life. That’s the magic of music, isn’t it?

Very nice. I spend most of my day with songs, either listening, or singing for myself and now I often sing on YouTube live or uploading my recorded song etc.
I live so many singers from Mukesh ji, Rafi ji, Lata ji, Asha ji, and so many whom I love by heart and they include so many Ghazal singers.
No doubt Mukesh ji have been a part of my heart.
I feel singing by heart is almost like worshipping for me.

you brought back memories of my dad, who was also very fond of writing and singing too …

“I don’t think songs always have to change your life in some grand, dramatic way.” … i feel the same way…sometimes they’re there to comfort you and keep you company through the different phases we must go through…🤍
