So… What Exactly Am I Doing Differently? 😁

How I Was Raised – a reflection on family values and carrying them forward

What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?

Well… I Tried to Find One. 😁

“What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?”

I actually had to think about this one.

And then I realised…

Not much. He he.

How I Was Raised Still Shapes Me. ❤️

I’m surprisingly similar to the way I was raised.

The way I was taught to look at people, I still do.

The way I was taught to care, I still care.

The way I was taught to stand by my people, I still do.

My life choices have changed with time, of course. Circumstances change, priorities change, the world changes.

But me?

Not dramatically.

I’m still very much the person they raised.

The only real difference is that, back then, someone else was making decisions for me.

Now I’m the one making decisions for someone else.

Back then, someone was trying to understand me.

Now I’m trying to understand someone else.

Back then, someone was standing beside me.

Now I’m the one standing beside someone.

And if anything, I think I’m trying to give a little more.

A little more love.

A little more understanding.

A little more patience.

A little more freedom to be heard.

Not because I think I was given too little.

Quite the opposite.

I was given so much that perhaps I grew up believing this is what you’re supposed to do for the people you love.

You take care.

You show up.

You understand.

You give more than you received, whenever you can.

Maybe that’s what I was actually taught.

Not to copy every detail of my upbringing, but to carry the good things forward—and add a little of my own.

So I suppose I don’t have a great answer to today’s prompt.

I looked for the thing I do completely differently.

Couldn’t find it.

I’m pretty much continuing the same story.

Just with a different name in the “decision-maker” column now. 😂

And perhaps a slightly bigger heart.

Because if I was loved that much…

why would I stop there? ❤️

He he. I guess some things are not meant to be changed between generations.

They’re meant to be continued.

And now I’m curious about you… ❤️

Is there something from the way you were raised that you’ve carried into the way you live, love, or raise the next generation?

Or perhaps something you consciously chose to do differently?

Tell me—I’d genuinely love to hear your little piece of the story. 😊

Very nice, yes our upbringing plays an important role in what we become, to some extent based what we acquired from our elders and to some extent in reaction to that.

What can a person say in response to this prompt, this might be more easy for others to explain.

Yes, absolutely. Sometimes we become who we are by following what we learned, and sometimes by choosing what feels different for us.🤍

Beautifully written and like the way you wrote as you are same as you were raised and the craving love 🤗

Sometimes the best way to honour how we were raised is to carry the good forward while making our own choices.

This was such a beautiful way to look at the question, Rajeshwari. ❤️ Sometimes we don’t need to do things differently just for the sake of being different. Carrying the love, care and values we received—and adding a little more of our own—is beautiful in itself. And that last line… “why would I stop there?” says it all. 😊❤️

That’s very interesting, to raised grounded is one of good generational gifts. Good begets good so kudos too to your parents, your words spoke volumes. I sincerely enjoyed reading this piece. Thank you 🎉

Thank you so much! 🤍 I truly believe the little values we pick up while growing up stay with us in ways we don’t even realise. And yes, I’ll happily pass the kudos on to my parents! 😄 So glad you enjoyed reading it. 🎉🌸✨

The deepest form of change is not rejecting what we inherited, but discerning what is worth carrying forward. Values that survive generations are not chains they are living legacies, renewed through our own choices. To receive love and turn it into greater understanding, patience, and presence for the next generation is to let love evolve without losing its roots.

Some inherit possessions; the fortunate inherit values. And the wisest do not merely preserve them they make them deeper.

    1. nihshabdblog Avatar

Absolutely Vijay ji 🤍 Sometimes the greatest change is not changing everything, but knowing what deserves to stay. And I love that thought of making inherited values deeper rather than simply repeating them. That feels like the real way love grows across generations. 🌿🦋✨

Rajeshwari, this is such a profoundly honest reflection. 🤍

When you realized there wasn’t a dramatic difference to share, you actually uncovered something far more meaningful, that the values worth having are worth keeping. There’s a quiet wisdom in that recognition that many miss entirely.

What struck me most was your observation about the shift from being loved to loving from someone making decisions for you, to you making decisions for someone else. That’s not just a change in roles; it’s a beautiful continuation of what your parents taught you. You’re not rebelling against your upbringing; you’re honoring it by deepening it.

The line “I was given so much that perhaps I grew up believing this is what you’re supposed to do for the people you love” really captures the essence of generational inheritance. It’s not about doing everything differently to prove independence. It’s about recognizing which threads are golden and which need rewoven.

And then that closing, “why would I stop there?” it’s both tender and powerful. You’re not just carrying forward; you’re expanding the love, patience, and understanding you received. That’s generational growth at its finest: not rejecting what came before, but honoring it by making it deeper.

In a world obsessed with breaking cycles, you’ve shown that sometimes the most radical act is choosing to continue the good ones. That takes courage, wisdom, and a secure heart.

Thank you for this gentle reminder that not all change is progress, and not all continuity is stagnation. Sometimes, the best version of ourselves is a reflection of those who raised us.

No reason to change anything when you had such good pillars to build on. Now, when you pass it on, you do it in your own way, and as you said, with a bigger heart. I guess it can be called different – as in, ever the better.

Some things are worth carrying forward, especially when they come from a place of love.
