The Stranger in Apartment 4402 | A Storytelling Challenge

A mysterious stranger appearing in a photograph at a housewarming party in Apartment 4402, for The Stranger in Apartment 4402 storytelling challenge.

Well, looks like I’m stepping into a new adventure! 😊 I’ve tried storytelling before, but this is my first time taking part in a story relay like this.

A big thank you to Savio Paes for passing the baton my way. I hope I can add a little twist, a dash of suspense, and perhaps a few surprises to this story.

So, without further ado, let’s see where this little adventure takes us.

The Rules of the Storytelling Challenge

Read the previous chapter, add your own continuation, nominate the next blogger, and link them up so the story can keep rolling!

No overthinking and no resetting the story. Just pick up where the last blogger left off and let your imagination take over.

Story Time! 🎭📖

And that evening, as the housewarming party continued, nobody seemed particularly bothered by the lack of curtains. If anything, it became yet another reason to tease Arjun about his new home.

The party was in full swing. Everyone was enjoying the food, the drinks, and the spectacular view from the balcony.

“Honestly, this place is gorgeous,” Rhea said, looking around. “I still can’t believe you managed to get an apartment on the forty-fourth floor.”

“Look at that view! You can see the whole city from here,” Rohan added.

We stepped out onto the balcony, admiring the lights twinkling across the neighbouring towers.

“I bet the view is even more beautiful on a clear night,” Ketan said, looking out at the city lights.

“Must be quite a sight,” Rohan replied.

“Of course! Forty-four floors up, a beautiful apartment, and the entire city lit up below you. You’re one lucky guy!” Kabir laughed.

“Absolutely,” Meera added. “I’d never leave this place.”

We were still teasing Arjun when Rhea suddenly suggested taking a group photograph.

She placed her phone on the balcony railing and set the timer.

Seven friends, one spectacular view, and a perfectly respectable housewarming party. Rhea clicked two or three pictures of us.

We were laughing and having a good time when we decided to check how the pictures had turned out.

“Wait. Who’s that?” Rhea suddenly asked.

We all leaned closer.

Inside the living room, standing near the dining table, was a man.

He was waving at the camera.

“Probably a reflection,” someone suggested.

But when we checked the next photograph, he was there too.

Only this time, he had a strange, almost frightening look on his face.

In the third photograph, he was standing right behind us.

We turned around.

Nobody was there.

There were only the seven of us.

To be continued…🦋

Choosing just one blogger for this challenge wasn’t easy, especially when there are so many wonderful writers around. I’m passing the baton to Lalitha, https://theloopylululog.blog, whose wonderful sense of humour and knack for adding a witty twist to just about anything make her the perfect person to take this story forward. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with! 😊

If for some reason the nominated person cannot follow through, feel free to choose another.

What a fantastic beginning to your storytelling adventure! You’ve built the suspense beautifully, and that mysterious figure appearing in all three photographs gave me goosebumps. The forty-fourth-floor setting, the missing curtains and the unexpected visitor create the perfect atmosphere for a gripping mystery. I love how you’ve ended it with just enough unanswered questions to keep readers guessing. Congratulations on taking up this creative challenge, and I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing how this intriguing story unfolds. Well done! 👏

That’s an amazing part of the story! I’m wondering from where did this extra guy come from in the three photographs, and I’m also wondering… why did this guy have a frightening look on his face. 🤔

I’m looking forward for the continuation of the story from Lalitha! I agree, she has a great sense of humor, and I enjoy reading her posts. ☺️👍

Thank you for developing Savio’s story into an interesting continuation. You have managed to turn a housewarming into a situation where nobody will want to look at the photographs again! Lalitha has quite a challenge ahead. I hope she has a good explanation for that unexpected guest!!

Thank you, Lalitha, for taking part and continuing the story from where it was left. Savio and I were not sure initially whether this attempt would take shape, and my NEBS Award is still trying to shine! I’ll be sure to check your post, my friend.

Thank you Rajeshwariji! I was anxious but when I took up the challenge and began to write my fingers tapped on in a frenzy as if ready to write an epic novel! Took the reins to reply to some of the comments here, sending them links to my post as they aren’t followers of my blog. Hope that’s ok?

Thank you so much for choosing me. This felt GOOD! Wildly good! 😈

Be honest with us, what is that ONE decision you took last year that you wish you had more wisdom, more counsel and more patience for before you took it, and what exactly happened afterwards that taught you a big lesson?

    *2.*
If you are to be very sincere with yourself today, what is the most difficult season you are in RIGHT NOW is it in your business where sales are low, is it in your career where growth is slow, is it in your relationship where there is confusion, or is it in your family where there is no peace? Just type one word.

    *3.*
If wisdom could speak to you loudly and clearly about your finances this very month, what do you sincerely think God is telling you to STOP doing, STOP buying, or STOP giving your money to, so that your financial life can finally breathe and grow?

    *4.*
Have you ever taken a very bold step in life, business or career that everyone around you thought was foolish, risky and senseless at that time, but later those same people came back to celebrate you and ask you how you did it? Share your story with us.

    *5.*
In this tough economy where many people are complaining and giving up, what is that one uncommon wisdom principle, habit, or mindset that you are currently using to stay ahead, stay afloat and stay relevant while others are falling behind?

    *6.*
If God appears to you today like He appeared to Solomon and says “Ask me for only ONE kind of wisdom for your next level wisdom for business, wisdom for marriage, wisdom for career, or wisdom for family”, which one would you ask for and why is that the most urgent for you right now?

What a thrilling continuation, Rajeshwari! 🎭 You’ve masterfully taken the baton and added a delicious layer of suspense to this story. The way you built up the atmosphere—from the cheerful teasing about curtains to the relaxed banter on the balcony—made the sudden shift to unease feel perfectly timed.

That photograph sequence was brilliantly done! The man waving, then the strange expression, and finally standing right behind them—each photo escalating the tension. My heart genuinely skipped a beat when they turned around and found nobody. The contrast between the warm, lighthearted party and the creeping dread is exactly what makes a good thriller work.

And that ending with the plates—”But there were only seven of us”—gave me chills! You’ve left the story in a wonderfully eerie place, and I can’t wait to see how Lalitha takes it forward. Beautifully written, with just the right balance of humour and horror. Well done!
